The Silent Engine Killer
Modern turf equipment relies heavily on Tier 4 compliant diesel engines, specifically Yanmar models, to reduce emissions. However, the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is a major source of downtime if misunderstood. When operators ignore regeneration warnings or frequently shut down the engine during a cycle, soot accumulates rapidly, leading to a forced derate or complete engine shutdown.
Diagnosing the Issue:
A clogged DPF will first present as a sluggish engine under load, especially when engaging the PTO for cutting units. If the exhaust temperature fails to reach the required threshold (around 600°C) due to short run times, the soot turns into hardened ash.
The Fix:
First, connect your diagnostic tool to check the soot load percentage. If it is below 85%, you can initiate a stationary "Parked Regeneration." Ensure the machine is outdoors on concrete (not turf, as the extreme heat will burn the grass). If the soot load exceeds 85%, the DPF must be removed and sent to a specialized facility for pneumatic ash cleaning. To prevent this, train operators to never turn the key off when the high-exhaust-temperature light is illuminated.
