Diagnosing Hydraulic Overheating in Extreme Summer Conditions


 When Fluid Turns to Fire

Operating heavy fairway mowers and tractors during the peak of summer pushes hydraulic systems to their absolute limits. When hydraulic oil overheats (exceeding 85°C / 185°F), its viscosity breaks down. The fluid becomes too thin to lubricate internal pump components, leading to sluggish lift cylinders, weak steering, and catastrophic pump failure.

Where to Look First:

  1. The Oil Cooler:

  2. The most common culprit is a blocked hydraulic oil cooler. Debris, dust, and grass clippings act like a blanket over the fins. Do not use high-pressure water to clean it, as this bends the delicate aluminum fins. Use compressed air to blow debris from the inside out.

  3. Internal Leaks (Bypassing):

  4. If the cooler is spotless and the fan is working, a component is bypassing high-pressure fluid internally. When a worn relief valve or a scored hydrostatic pump allows fluid to squeeze through tiny gaps, it generates immense friction heat.

  5. Fluid Viscosity:

  6. Ensure you are using the manufacturer-specified high-temp ISO VG 46 or 68 hydraulic oil for summer months. Standard ISO 32 may be too thin for severe high-ambient temperatures.
