Restoring Forward Drive
Walk-behind greens mowers rely on a mechanical clutch drum and friction band (or cone clutch) to transfer power from the engine to the traction drum. Over time, operators may notice the machine slipping on steep inclines or taking longer to engage when the bail is squeezed.
Diagnosing the Slip:
Before tearing apart the drivetrain, check the simple things. Is the clutch cable properly tensioned? Cables stretch over time. Adjust the barrel nut to remove excessive slack. If the cable is tight but the mower still slips, the friction material is compromised.
The Fix:
Remove the side cover to access the clutch assembly. Inspect the friction lining. If it is glazed (smooth and shiny), it has been slipping and overheating. You can sometimes scuff the glazing off with heavy-grit sandpaper for a temporary fix, but replacement is the only permanent solution. Also, inspect the clutch drum for deep scoring. A grooved drum will destroy a new friction band in days and must be machined or replaced.
