Surviving the Summer Swelter
Utility vehicles and electric golf carts are the backbone of any turf maintenance crew. However, managing deep-cycle lead-acid batteries in high-ambient-temperature environments (frequently exceeding 40°C) is a massive challenge. Extreme heat accelerates water evaporation and sulfation, killing a battery pack in just one season if ignored.
The Essential Maintenance Routine:
Watering: Deep-cycle batteries consume water during charging. Always check the water levels after fully charging the battery, never before (unless the plates are exposed). Adding water before charging causes the electrolyte to expand and boil over, spilling highly corrosive acid onto the vehicle chassis. Use only distilled water.
Terminal Corrosion: Acid vapors combined with high humidity create thick corrosion on terminals, restricting current flow. Clean terminals monthly with a mixture of baking soda and water, and coat them with a dielectric terminal protector spray.
Equalization Charging: Once a month, perform an equalization charge (a controlled overcharge) to balance the voltage across all cells and break down early sulfate crystals forming on the lead plates.
