Troubleshooting Turf Sprayers: Erratic Pressure and Clogged Nozzles

 Precision Application Requires Precision Maintenance

Applying fertilizers, fungicides, and herbicides to a stadium pitch or golf course requires absolute accuracy. A turf sprayer operating with erratic pressure or blocked nozzles will result in localized turf burn or untreated patches that quickly succumb to disease.

Diagnosing the Flow:

If the pressure gauge is bouncing rapidly or the system cannot maintain a steady PSI, the problem usually lies in the suction line.

1. Suction Strainer: Check the primary suction strainer between the tank and the pump. A clogged strainer starves the diaphragm or centrifugal pump, causing cavitation.

2. Pump Diaphragms: If the pump oil is milky white, the internal diaphragms are ruptured, mixing water with the oil. The pump requires an immediate rebuild.

3. Nozzle Maintenance: Never use a wire or a pin to clean a clogged spray nozzle. The orifice is precision-molded brass or poly; scratching it alters the spray pattern entirely. Use an old toothbrush and warm soapy water, or an air compressor to blow out the blockage.
