Surviving Topdressing: Protecting Turf Equipment from Sand Damage

 The Necessary Evil of Sand

Topdressing greens and fairways with silica sand is essential for drainage and a smooth playing surface. However, to a turf equipment technician, sand is liquid sandpaper. When mowers are sent out right after a topdressing application, the abrasive dust destroys reel bearings, grinds down bedknives, and wears out roller seals in a matter of days.

Preventative Maintenance Strategy:

1. The Pre-Cut Adjustments:

2. Never use newly ground reels on freshly topdressed turf. Keep an older set of "sand reels" (cutting units specifically designated for topdressed areas). You must also raise the Height of Cut (HOC) slightly to avoid picking up the bulk of the sand.

3. Post-Operation Wash Down:

4. Washing the equipment immediately after use is critical. However, mechanics must train operators to avoid spraying high-pressure water directly at bearing seals. High pressure drives the microscopic sand particles straight past the rubber lip and into the ball bearings.

5. The Purge Greasing:

6. After washing, every roller and reel bearing must be greased immediately. Pump the grease gun until you see fresh, clean grease pushing out of the seals, effectively pushing out any water and sand that may have entered.
